Port Chalmers has a been host to a flourishing artist community over time. Port Chalmers Maritime Museum is delighted to now provide a designated pop-up art space to showcase works of our local artist community.
New in our Pop-Up Gallery: Port Workers through the years since 1848.
Our latest exhibition takes you on a fascinating journey through the changes in port workers' roles over the past 177 years, as vessels, land-side machinery, exports and labour requirements all moved with the times.
Roll the clock back to 1848, before there were even wharves. Ships anchored in the harbour and cargo and passengers were brought ashore by watermen and lightermen.
